The Health Technology Excellence Award is presented each year to recognize innovative and effective technology management initiatives undertaken by ECRI member healthcare institutions. ECRI presents the award to the applicant that has carried out the most exceptional initiative to improve patient safety, reduce costs, or otherwise facilitate better strategic management of health technology. We're pleased to share information about the top submissions from our most recent competition, as well as those from previous years. Submissions consist of a short essay describing an ongoing or recently completed health technology management initiative at a member institution.

The 17th Health Technology Excellence Award (2023)
The 17th winner of our award is The Guthrie Clinic for its strategic implementation of a technology solution that both addresses an immediate need and better positions the organization to deliver quality care in the future. Along with the winning submission, we named a runner-up for this year's award and selected three additional entries that deserve recognition.
The Winner
The Guthrie Clinic (Sayre, PA): Using AI-Enhanced Video Technology to Overcome Staffing Shortages and Improve Patient Care: The Guthrie Clinic's Award-Winning Initiative. Using an artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced video and communications platform, the organization rapidly implemented a telesitting program to address an immediate need—a staffing crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic—but also to serve as the first phase of a more ambitious project, which is currently under way: developing a virtual command center.
Runner-Up
Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality (Baltimore, MD): Building a Better Safety-Event-Reporting System—Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality Meets the Challenge. The organization developed an innovative safety-event-reporting software application that has led to demonstrable improvements in the organization's reporting and learning culture.
