​A member recently wrote to ECRI Institute asking for guidance on how frequently background checks should be performed for physicians, physician assistants (PAs), and nurse practitioners (NPs) working in ambulatory settings.

In our response, we note that background checks are an essential part of credentialing and privileging. States have varying requirements for background checks and for criminal background checks, so practices should first check state law to determine what requirements apply in their particular case. Practices may also wish to consult legal counsel. Many states have recently strengthened requirements regarding child abuse, requiring checks and specific training for providers.
