​While providers may be an important first line of defense in identifying elder abuse, a multidisciplinary approach is needed to address the physical, emotional, and financial problems that can arise from elder abuse, states an article published November 12, 2015, in the New England Journal of Medicine. Elder abuse affects at least 10% of senior citizens in the United States, write the authors, and primary care providers may be one of the most likely people in an elder's life to identify abuse or neglect.
