Aon/ASHRM Liability Survey: Claims Frequency, Severity Stable; Data for Hospital-Employed Physicians

Hospital claims frequency grew at only 1% annually in 2012, and severity increased modestly at around 2.5%, continuing recent trends of slow, steady annual growth, according to results of the annual Aon/ASHRM Hospital and Physician Professional Liability Benchmark Study presented Monday at the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) Annual Conference in Washington, DC. This year’s study, presented by Erik Johnson, FCAS, MAAA, and Kristin Monopolis, FCAS, MAAA, of Aon, included data from 125 health systems and 160,000 occupied beds, representing about 25% of the U.S. hospital market. An additional survey reviewed the claims experience of more than 21,000 hospital-employed physicians. Although the claims experience nationwide and in most individual jurisdictions was consistent with that of recent years, the physician survey yielded new data.
