Over-the-counter (OTC) soaps can no longer contain certain antibacterial chemicals, including triclosan and triclocarban, states a September 2, 2016, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) press announcement. The final rule applies to consumer antiseptic wash products containing one or more of 19 specific active ingredients, including triclosan and triclocarban, two of the most common antibacterial ingredients in consumer products; the rule does not affect hand sanitizers or antibacterial wipes.
