​​Study results indicating that the costs of false-positives far exceed expectations may point to a need to base mammography screening decisions on individualized, risk-based assessments instead of population-wide screening. The study, published in the April 2015 Health Affairs, is based on a sample of more than 700,000 women age 40 to 59 years from a U.S. health insurance plan.
