Physicians Discuss Challenges of New Value-Based Payment Models

More physician practices are trying out new payment models intended to control healthcare costs and improve quality, but many report concerns about managing the large quantity of data and keeping up with payers' highly variable performance measures, finds a study from the American Medical Association and the RAND Corporation. The researchers suggest that physician practices could focus more effectively on quality improvement if performance measures from federal and other payers were aligned to be more consistent. In general, physicians agreed that switching to alternative payment models has fostered team-based care and access through telemedicine and community-based care.
