Texting Patient Orders is Still Prohibited, Says CMS

​Texting patient orders is prohibited regardless of platform used, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reiterated in a December 28, 2017, memorandum. Texting orders from a provider to any member of the care team is not in compliance with CMS' Conditions of Participation (CoP) or its Conditions for Coverage (CfCs). However, texting patient information among members of the healthcare team is permissible, as long as it occurs on a secure platform, CMS said.
