Opioids, Telemedicine, and Malnutrition among the Topics Addressed by OIG’s Updated Work Plan

​Opioid prescribing and telemedicine are among the topics the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) plans to address as part of the November 2017 update to its work plan. As a way to combat the opioid public health emergency, OIG says it will identify Medicaid beneficiaries who received an extreme amount of opioids as a way to cut down on doctor shopping, as well as to identify the doctors associated with this practice. Medicaid programs are seeing a significant increase in claims related to telemedicine service, OIG said.
