The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has posted an interactive map showing de-identified Medicare Part D prescription claims filed for opioids in 2013. Information is available at the state, county, and ZIP code level. Based on the CMS data, Alabama, Nevada, and Oklahoma had the highest rates of opioid prescriptions in 2013—between 7.3% and 7.5% of all prescriptions—well above the national average of 5.3%.
