The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has published an update to their 10 guiding principles for the care of patients who have diabetes or are at risk for diabetes. Published in August 2018, the guidance emphasizes the importance of self-management, education, support, and patient-centered care. NIDDK has added one new principle to this update: to address overweight and obesity in the management of diabetes. According to a related September 5, 2018, article published by the American Academy of Family Physicians, "bariatric surgery for obesity is highly effective."
