​Alcohol and drug abuse and dependence among physicians, collectively referred to as substance use disorder (SUD), is a serious threat to healthcare quality. Not only does it create a risk to patients, but it also creates potential liability for the healthcare facility, as well as other healthcare professionals involved in the care of a patient treated by an impaired physician.
