The Joint Commission provides sentinel event statistics for 2013 in an April 15, 2014, update of its Sentinel Event Data Summary web page. Of the 887 total events reported in 2013, delay in treatment (113); wrong-patient, wrong-site, or wrong-procedure surgery (109); unintended retention of a foreign body (102); patient suicide (90); and falls (82) were the most frequently reported.
