With LGBT-Focused Education Lacking in Medical Schools, Students Are Driving Change

​Medical students are pushing for increased education on LGBT-focused healthcare issues, a January 20, 2019, NPR article says. Overall, LGBT people, and particularly transgender people, experience disproportionately high rates of mental illness, HIV, unemployment, and harassment, and one in five LGBT adults has avoided medical care because of fear of discrimination, according to the article. A 2011 study showed the median amount of time medical students received education on LGBT health topics was five hours, the article says, and some medical students received no LGBT-focused education at all.
