The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) has recommended that healthcare facilities discontinue the use of multidose medication vials to prevent the risk of cross-contamination, according to “Recommended Practices for Medication Safety,” which is available in the association’s newly released 2012 edition of Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices. The recommendations outline best practices for all six phases of medication use: procuring, prescribing, transcribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring.
