​The average cost of defending a medical professional liability lawsuit from 2008 to 2017 was $52,012, according to a new infographic from the Medical Professional Liability Association's Data Sharing Project (DSP). According to DSP, $1.8 billion was spent in defense of medical professional liability claims and lawsuits during this 10-year period. Although 74% of claims and lawsuits were resolved with no indemnity paid, those still averaged a cost of $41,209 to defend.
