​​​Staff education is essential to the success of a healthcare facility's falls prevention program. Indeed, Joint Commission has identified incomplete staff orientation and training, particularly of new staff, as one of several contributing factors for serious falls. Staff orientation, as well as periodic in-service programs and impromptu bedside training provided as needed, should provide education about the organization's policies and procedures for falls prevention and management, including its approach to assessing patients for falls risk, its falls prevention protocols, and its falls response procedures.

To help facilities implement their falls prevention programs, ECRI has developed this training program to help organizations educate their staff on the intrinsic (patient-specific) and extrinsic (environmental) risks of falling, emphasizing initial and ongoing patient and environmental assessment as well as falls prevention strategies.
