  • Diagnostic ultrasound scanners are used to obtain images and other data that are used to assess patient anatomy and physiology. These devices are also used to provide imaging guidance for interventional procedures.
  • Premium general-purpose ultrasound scanners are used to obtain high-quality ultrasound data and allow users to perform advanced imaging assessments.
  • The major components of the Acuson S3000 and their functions are:
    • A console on wheels that contains a computer that controls the ultrasound signal generator, receiver, and processor using Siemens SieStream HD hardware technology. It offers the following standard imaging modes and software features:
      • Conventional and harmonic B-mode imaging
      • M-mode
      • Pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler
      • Continuous-wave (CW) Doppler
      • Color Doppler imaging (CDI)
      • Power Doppler imaging (PDI)
      • eSieScan Workflow Protocols
      • Custom Tissue Imaging (CTI)
      • eSieImage Multiparametric Optimization
      • Advanced SieClear with Color Doppler Velocity (CDV) or Color Doppler Energy (CDE) imaging
      • SieScape B-mode and color panoramic imaging
      • Clarify Vascular Enhancement (VE) Technology
      • Multi-modality review
      • DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) reporting
      • Data transfer to Nuance PowerScribe 360 reporting
    • A control panel user interface
      • Used to select transducers, presets, and imaging modes; enter patient data; adjust image quality; obtain measurements; annotate images; and perform calculations.
      • The control panel is position-adjustable and has various hard controls including buttons, slide pods, knobs, and a trackball. A 30.7 cm (12.1 in) color touchscreen is located above the control panel. An alphanumeric hard keyboard retracts under the control panel when not in use. There are transducer cable hooks located under the control panel. Transducer holders and an optional gel bottle warmer can be attached to the control panel handles. Those handles are used to position the user interface during exams and for transport.
    • A 54.6 cm (21.5 in) flat-panel video display
      • Used to view ultrasound images and other data
      • Attached to the scanner on an articulated arm to allow users to position it for optimal viewing during exams
    • Five transducer ports
      • Used to connect transducers.
      • Located on the lower front of the console; three active ports and one transducer connector holder for imaging transducers. One port is only for CW Doppler transducers. An adjustable-intensity light provides illumination for the ports under the control panel.
    • Storage shelf
      • Used to secure peripheral devices such as fusion hardware or a color printer
      • Located on top of the system behind the user control panel
    • Storage bin (1) 22.9 × 8.9 × 8.9 cm (9.0 × 3.5 × 3.5 in) (2) Used to store accessories such as gel bottles and exam gloves
    • Internal digital storage
      • Used to archive acquired data and to support software applications.
      • A two-terabyte hard drive is located in the console.
    • Access ports
      • Allow data to be exported for archiving or review and imported for fusion imaging and review
      • Available ports: Five USB ports, Ethernet port, S-Video and digital display port, Digital Navigation Link (DNL), ECG, and an audio jack
  • Facilities and clinical departments that would use this device include:
    • Radiology department
    • Freestanding imaging facility
  • Optional components and software features include:
    • Application-specific transducers.
      • Transmit the ultrasound beam into the patient's body and receive the returning echoes for data acquisition, processing, and display.
      • The transducers consist of a handheld probe on a cable with a connector to attach it to the scanner.
      • See the table Transducers Supported by the Acuson S3000 HELX Evolution with Touch Control below.
    • eSieImage multiparametric image optimization, which is an advanced version of automated image optimization that dynamically improves image quality without user input.
