Understanding the Basics of PSO Protections

Healthcare providers can protect sensitive patient safety information and create a learning system for improvements by being part of a Patient Safety Organization (PSO). PSOs provide federal levels of protection for providers that preempt state protections. This protection enables providers to mitigate patient safety risks by creating a culture where providers and encouraged to talk openly about safety improvements. The federal Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act, created in 2005, established a system of Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs) and the structures to support patient safety.
