ECRI Institute disseminates its Universal Medical Device Nomenclature System™ (UMDNS) as broadly as possible in support of worldwide needs to improve the technology base for healthcare. At the same time, ECRI Institute must protect the organization and consistency of UMDNS to ensure that we can meet the needs of all UMDNS users, regardless of nation or language.
This agreement sets forth ECRI Institute's policy for use of UMDNS. You are responsible for complying with this policy.
What is UMDNS?
ECRI Institute's UMDNS is an international medical device naming and coding system used in thousands of institutions worldwide. It has been translated into many languages. The U.S. National Library of Medicine incorporates UMDNS into its Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). National medical device regulatory agencies employ UMDNS to organize their information systems. Large device-related databases and many publications use UMDNS for indexing and retrieving information. Thousands of hospitals and other organizations employ UMDNS to organize their equipment inventories in conjunction with the appropriate management systems and software.
UMDNS consists of a unique five-digit universal medical device code (UMDC) number followed by a plain-language description in English or other languages. The key to system consistency and integrity is the precise correlation of code numbers with the specific physical entity. Use these numbers to establish document files and computer-based data retrieval systems, and to index articles, hazard publications, recall reports, regulatory data sets, etc. UMDNS terms are also used in more detailed product classifications.
UMDNS is available as downloadable ASCII and Microsoft Excel files. To obtain a user ID and password for UMDNS, you must first complete a registration form. ECRI Institute will send you an ID and password that is valid through December 31, 2018.
How Can You Use UMDNS?
You may use UMDNS, free of charge, provided that you comply with the following conditions:
- Copies: You may copy UMDNS for use within your organization provided that ECRI Institute's copyright notice is affixed on each copy. You may use all or part of UMDNS in materials for other organizations provided that you comply with the notices requirement listed below.
- Translations: UMDNS is available in non-English versions. If you are interested in translating UMDNS into a language not currently available, you must notify ECRI Institute.

When you use UMDNS in a program that serves other organizations, you must include the following statement: "The medical device nomenclature and the five-digit number associated with each medical device are part of ECRI Institute's Universal Medical Device Nomenclature System (UMDNS), a widely employed international classification system for information indexing and retrieval. The five-digit number is the authorized ECRI Institute's Universal Medical Device Code (UMDC)."
What Uses Are Prohibited?
You may not alter or add nomenclature or codes to UMDNS, sell or lease UMDNS to third parties without ECRI Institute's written permission. You may not incorporate UMDNS into a commercial product without ECRI Institute's written permission and payment of a support fee.
