Surgical robotic systems are used to perform minimally invasive procedures that might otherwise be difficult with traditional open or laparoscopic techniques. They are broadly divided into two groups: general-purpose robots which are designed to perform a number of different minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures, and specialty robots which are designed to focus on specific procedures and/or clinical specialties.
