​Phacoemulsification is one type of extracapsular cataract extraction, aprocedure used to remove the lens nucleus, the surrounding cortex, and theenclosing anterior capsule. A cataract is a foggy area in the normallytransparent lens that inhibits the transmission of light to the retina andcauses a painless blurring of vision and/or glare from lights.
