​Phacoemulsification is one type of extracapsular cataract extraction, a procedure used to remove the lens nucleus, the surrounding cortex, and the enclosing anterior capsule. A cataract is a foggy area in the normally transparent lens that inhibits the transmission of light to the retina and causes a painless blurring of vision and/or glare from lights.
