Magnetic resonance/ultrasound (MR/US) fusion has emerged as an alternative or adjunct approach to improve prostate cancer detection. Although transrectal ultrasound imaging and ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies have been used to confirm the presence of prostate cancer, multiparametric MRI has been shown to improve the detection of abnormalities that may represent prostate cancer when compared to the US method alone. Once an abnormality is identified on MRI, the patient then undergoes a prostate biopsy to confirm the diagnosis and stage their disease.
