Heart-lung bypass units are external systems that circulate, oxygenate, and filter the blood, acting as a temporary substitute for circulatory and pulmonary function. In each of the last four calendar years, Sorin has generated at least 60% of all member interest in heart-lung bypass units. In March 2011, Terumo entered into a consent decree with the FDA to restrict distribution of its heart-lung system from its main manufacturing plant; interest in the company dwindled during this time (the consent decree was lifted earlier this year).
