The information technology security vendor Symantec says that the group behind the Gatak Trojan malware is targeting the healthcare industry because the data are valuable and providers frequently use legacy software that is less secure than upgraded products, according to a November 23, 2016, HealthcareITNews article. Gatak infects computers when users access websites promising product keys for pirated software; when the user downloads a product key generator, the malware also installs on the computer. Enisa, a European technology security company, said that vulnerability to attacks increases when medical devices are connected to the internet, states a November 25, 2016, article published on ZDNet.
