​September is sepsis awareness month and the Sepsis Alliance has created a toolkit for healthcare providers with resources for providers, nurses, patients, and the public. Sepsis is the body's overwhelming response to infection, which can lead to severe complications or death. In the United States, 270,000 people die from sepsis every year, which is more than from prostate cancer, breast cancer, and AIDS combined. The Sepsis Alliance states that even despite its prevalence, sepsis has symptoms that are correctly identified by fewer than 1% of Americans.
