EHR Implementation Brings Workflow, Efficiency Changes in Primary Care

Workflow and communication changes that accompany the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) in primary care can vary in different organizations, making specific outcomes difficult to predict, according to a recent study from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Despite the differences, general trends did emerge in the study of 120 clinicians at six medical offices. In general, providers spent more time communicating with each other by computer and by in-person speaking and consequently spent less time talking to patients.
