​The Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has provided clarification on the maximum amount that individuals can be charged when requesting copies of protected health information (PHI), in a new entry on the agency's website addressing various aspects of individuals' right to access and obtain a copy of their health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). OCR provided the clarification in response to questions received after release of a fact sheet and two sets of frequently asked questions (FAQs) on the HIPAA "right to access" earlier this year.
