American Diabetes Association Releases 2017 Treatment Recommendations

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) issued its annual update to its standards for treating diabetes. ADA says that metformin remains the preferred first-line treatment, unless contraindicated, and should be prescribed for most patients at diagnosis. The standards suggest starting at 500 mg once or twice daily to minimize gastrointestinal side effects, followed by gradually titrating up to 2 g daily.
