March 18, 2019 | Strategic Insights for Ambulatory Care
Temple University recently issued an alert about verified cases of mumps, according to a March 1, 2019, article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Mumps, which is a contagious viral and untreatable disease that involves pain and swelling of the salivary glands, has also popped up in recent weeks at a private school in Cleveland and in immigrant detention centers in Texas. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mumps cases in the United States declined by more than 99% since the vaccine was introduced in 1967; however, cases have risen recently, from 229 in 2012 to 6,366 in 2016.
