A report on freestanding ambulatory surgical facilities operating in Pennsylvania revealed some inconsistencies in presurgical assessment procedures and policies among facilities, states an article from the March 2012 Pennsylvania Patient Safety Advisory. The authors found that most transfers to hospitals occurred in cardiac care and that most same-day surgery cancellations occurred for medical reasons. The transfer rate was 1.16 per 1,000 completed procedures, and the cancellation rate was 18.09 per 1,000 completed procedures. Most participating organizations were physician-owned (63.5%) and accredited (97%).
