Doctors’ Communication Skills Affect Patients’ Adherence to Medication Regimens

If patients react positively to a doctor’s communication with them, they are more likely to refill their medications and adhere to the regimen, reports a study published online December 31, 2012, in JAMA Internal Medicine (formerly the Archives of Internal Medicine). “Communication matters,” the lead author is quoted as saying in a related press release. “By supporting doctors in developing meaningful relationships with their patients, we could help patients take better care of themselves.” The study provided a cross section of more than 9,000 patients in the Diabetes Study of Northern California (DISTANCE) with a four-question Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) survey.
