​The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is seeking input on how it might use risk evaluation and mitigation strategies to facilitate appropriate opioid prescribing. For example, FDA said, its opioid policy steering committee could attempt to curb situations in which an individual receives more pills than he or she needs by requiring sponsors to ensure that providers present specific documentation for a prescription over a specific amount, such as a written explanation as to why that quantity is medically necessary. This step could be electronically incorporated into a workflow, FDA says, and it is interested in exploring evidence-based research on approaches that support electronic documentation.
