Organizations accredited by the Joint Commission are permitted to store up to 300 cubic feet of oxygen in containers per smoke compartment in the means of egress without being stored in a cabinet or room, states an article published in the December 5, 2012, Joint Commission Online. The article provides compliance and safety tips for storing freestanding medical gas cylinders; compliance and safety tips for managing piped medical gas systems were covered in a previous edition of Joint Commission Online (see the December 5, 2012, HRC Alerts). According to the Joint Commission, limiting the amount of gas open to the means of egress to 300 cubic feet is important to ensure that building air-handling equipment can keep the environment stable.
