Organizations accredited by the Joint Commission are required to define and adopt a maintenance strategy for managing medical gases, including time frames for inspecting, testing, and maintaining critical components of the piped medical gas system (EC.02.05.09), states an article published in the November 28, 2012, issue of Joint Commission Online. The article provides compliance and safety tips for managing piped medical gas systems. According to the Joint Commission, whenever a piped medical gas system is opened, such as for repairs, the system must be tested for correct gas, gas purity, and pressure by qualified individuals to ensure that there were no accidental cross-connections that could result in contaminated gases.
