Patient Handling and Lift Program Helps Older Staff Move Patients Safely
November 14, 2012 | Strategic Insights for Health System
The implementation of a safe patient lift program, including the use of slings, at one multistate health system has allowed employees to remain on the job even as they age, according to a November 1, 2012, profile in Risk & Insurance. The program has led not only to fewer patient falls and higher rates of patient satisfaction but also to reduced rates of employee injury and increased staff approval, as well. The profile notes that one hospital in the system is even using the prospect of minimal heavy lifting as a recruiting tool. Financially, the program has been a success as well, saving nearly $22 million over five years to date. The patient lift program is just one aspect of the health systems’ workers’ compensation and disability management program, however.
