Diagnostic errors are “underrecognized and underappreciated” in radiology practice, write the authors of an article in the September 2013 American Journal of Roentgenology. Defined as diagnoses that are “missed, wrong, or delayed as detected by some subsequent definitive test or finding,” diagnostic errors contribute to nearly 75% of all medical malpractice claims against radiologists. Diagnostic errors have multiple causes, but they are primarily attributed to cognitive and system errors, the authors write.
