Aon/ASHRM Professional Liability Benchmark Analysis for 2018 Released

​The severity of hospital professional liability claims is increasing at a 2% annual rate and is expected to reach an annual loss rate of $2,860 per occupied bed equivalent in 2019, said Virginia Jones, FCAS, MAAA, health care practice leader, Commercial Risk Solutions, Aon, at the October 7-10, 2018, annual conference of the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM) in Nashville. Reporting on the results of the latest edition of the Aon/ASHRM Hospital and Physician Professional Liability Benchmark Analysis, Jones said the frequency of claims has remained flat at a 0% annual rate. The analysis is based on a database of more than 107,000 hospital and physician professional liability claims, representing more than $20.2 billion in incurred losses from 118 health systems providing data for the report. The projections assume a limit of $2 million per occurrence.
