Two-Star Army Retired General Shares Leadership Lessons with ASHRM Meeting Attendees

Leadership is "about your best getting better," Major General Vincent E. Boles, a retired U.S. Army general officer, told risk managers at the October 7, 2018, opening keynote address at the annual conference of the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM) in Nashville. Leaders can gain the commitment of their team members, he said, by helping them answer three critical questions: (1) What's the standard? (what are we trying to do?) (2) What's the system? (what's in place for team members to achieve the standard?) and (3) Who's in charge? (who is responsible for what within the system?). By ensuring that team members understand the answers to the three questions, risk managers, as leaders, can bring added value to their organizations.
