​An estimated 24.6 million individuals age 12 or older were current illicit drug users in 2013—almost 10% of the U.S. population, according to a report summarizing the findings of the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), published September 4, 2014, by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The NSDUH Report: Substance Use and Mental Health Estimates from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: Overview of Findings provides 2013 estimates on the prevalence of substance abuse and mental illness in the United States and reports on the need for and barriers to substance use treatment, mental health care, and care of individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental illness.
