Feds Question Florida’s Practice of Placing Disabled Children in Nursing Homes

Federal regulators have notified Florida’s attorney general and other state health officials that the state may be violating the federal Americans with Disabilities Act for allowing children with disabilities to be kept in adult nursing homes, states a September 6, 2012, Miami Herald article. According to the article, more than 3,300 children with disabilities are at risk of being placed in adult nursing homes because the state is cutting nursing and other services that would otherwise keep them at home with their families. Investigators have noted that children in these situations are not exposed to the social and recreational activities that are critical to child development and that educational opportunities are limited to as little as 45 minutes a day.
