Complying with Joint Commission and NRC Regulations to Secure Radioactive Materials
September 12, 2012 | Risk Management News
Joint Commission accreditation standards do not require hospitals to provide a staff escort for individuals who deliver radioactive materials to the facility, states an August 2012 Environment of Care News article. According to the article, whether an organization is in compliance will depend mostly on its policy regarding the security of radioactive materials required under environment of care standard EC.02.02.01, element of performance 6. Under this requirement, organizations must minimize risks associated with selecting, handling, storing, transporting, using, and disposing of radioactive materials. Although individual policies will vary, all must follow the recommendations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
