​Ways bedside nurses can optimize antibiotic use were the focus of a recently released white paper from the American Nurses Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The white paper was developed after a series of online meetings and a one-day conference involving nurses with an interest or expertise in antibiotic stewardship. The experts offered several key areas and suggestions in which nurses can contribute. The first suggestion is for nurses to obtain appropriate cultures before antibiotics are started. Another suggestion is for nurses to use microbiology results to guide the selection of antibiotics and guide the decision in order to stop therapy if a culture results represent colonization rather than infection.
