Researchers posit that three factors are responsible for adjusting perceptions of the nursing shortage: increased annual output from nursing education programs, delayed retirement due to slow economic recovery, and employment outside of the hospital setting. These and other findings are published in the July 2014 issue of Health Affairs. Researchers used data from the Current Population Survey (CPS) and the American Community Survey (ACS), identifying 70,724 registered nurses (RNs) between the ages of 23 and 69 in the CPS and 307,187 such nurses in the ACS. Survey responses between 1969 and 2012 were aggregated and used to estimate the number of nurses employed full-time during each year of the review period.
