ONC Report Questions Wearable Trackers’ Security

​Organizations that are "not regulated by HIPAA ​Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the FTC Federal Trade Commission, or state law may collect, share, or use health information about individuals in ways that may put such data at risk of being shared improperly," states the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in a report released on July 19, 2016. In the report, ONC recognizes that new methods (e.g., cloud-based tracking systems, wearable fitness trackers) of collecting, sharing, and storing health information are outside the HIPAA protections.
