Surgeon-reported morbidity and mortality (M&M) data and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs) capture different sets of information. This means that they catch different patient safety events, thereby complementing each other as approaches to identify adverse outcomes. Results of a retrospective observational study on this subject were published in abstract by the Journal of the American College of Surgeons on July 5, 2018. Researchers reviewed data for more than 6,500 surgical hospitalizations and found that, in nearly 10% of these cases, a complication was identified by M&M data or PSIs or both.
