OSHA Launches Awareness Campaign about Musculoskeletal Disorder Hazards

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the hazards that can cause musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare workers who administer patient care, states a July 16, 2013, OSHA news release. According to the news release, 99% of musculoskeletal disorder cases involving patient handling in 2010 were caused by overexertion that resulted in sprains, strains, soft-tissue injuries, or back injuries. Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants incurred occupational injuries or illnesses in 49% of the cases; registered nurses accounted for 17%; and home health aides for another 6%.
