Creating a policy that takes into consideration the requirements of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is one way that healthcare organizations can ensure their vigilance in maintaining the security of radioactive materials, states a July 11, 2012, article posted on the Joint Commission’s website. According to the article, NRC requires that organizations licensed to transport, store, and use radioactive material ensure security when radioactive material is not in storage, such as during transport; secure radioactive material once it is at a designated storage location; maintain records of receipt, transfer, and disposal of any radioactive material; and conduct physical inventories at required frequencies to account for the continued security of radioactive material.
