Health IT–Related Safety Risks Undetected, Says ONC Report

​Organizations tend to view health information technology (IT) as a solution for patient safety issues and may not fully understand the new risks introduced by health IT systems, such as electronic health records (EHRs), says a new report released by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). The research for the report, Promoting Patient Safety Through Effective Health Information Technology Risk Management, was conducted by ECRI Institute, the RAND Corporation, and other health informatics research experts under contract to ONC. The project involved 11 organizations (seven hospitals and four ambulatory sites) that undertook a process improvement strategy with their health IT systems.
