When using patient lifts, staff should always match the sling to the specific lift and the weight of the patient, according to updated guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Furthermore, all slings must be approved for use by the patient lift manufacturer, as no sling is suitable for use with all patient lifts. FDA notes that these medical devices provide many benefits when properly used, including reduced risk of injury to patients and caregivers; however, improper use of patient lifts can cause patient falls that may result in severe injuries, including head traumas and fractures, or death.
